An archaic fortified enclosure, probably Hittite or Phrygian, perched on the southern rim of a
deep rocky gorge (less than 300 m. south of the Kiliseler water-pump ridge).
The structure commands a superb view of the Tahirler valley, and may have
served as a defensive look-out post guarding access to the Tacettin plateau
and the larger settlement at Poyrazoglu. Ceramics collected at the site in
1997 included Phrygian or Galatian painted ware, but few Hellenistic or Roman
shards, in contrast to the North Churches area in the valley below. Small-scale
illegal digging within the enclosure area has exposed pieces of early Byzantine
course-ware similar to those found on the Kilisiler water-pump ridge.
During the 2002 field season, we plan to produce a more detailed map of
this site, supplemented by balloon photography.
