Sites in the Tahirler Survey Region

Poyrazoglu (Son of the North Wind)

An archaic fortified enclosure, probably Hittite or Phrygian, located near the modern village of Tacettin. During a one-day survey of the site in 1998, we produced a preliminary sketch map of the structure, which sits atop a low rocky hill, overlooking a small meadow and stream. Recent road construction on the eastern side of the Poyrazoglu hill has uncovered large quantities of ceramics (Early Bronze Age through Byzantine). Illegal excavations at the southern foot of the hill have uncovered a half-dozen unlined graves. Local farmers report that there was once a church in the meadow as well, but we were unable to locate any architectural evidence to support this oral tradition. In construction technique, the structure at Poyrazoglu closely resembles the nearby fortress at Kizlarin Sekisi, which lies less than 3 kms. to the North. During the 2002 field season, we plan to produce a more detailed map of this site, supplemented by balloon photography.
