Survey type:

The modified version of the variable-area transect method consisted of a transect plot with eight subplots.  The transect line is 40 meters long with subplots on either side extending for a maximum of 20 meters.  A minimum stem diameter of 5 centimeters was selected before the trees were counted.  The diameter was measured using a DBH (diameter at breast height) tape.  Each tree that was 5 centimeters DBH or larger was flagged and numbered with the transect, subplot and tree number.  The first 5 trees that met the minimum DBH were recorded.  If no trees met the minimum 5 cm DBH within 15 meters of the transect line, no trees were recorded and the subplot ended.  If at least 1 tree met the minimum DBH within 15 meters of the transect line then the subplot continued to a maximum of 20 meters from the transect line.   These variances in plot size will not present any statistically significant variances in the results
