China-US Professional Workshop on Regional Sustainable Development
May 5 - 9, 2009 University of Washington, Seattle,
USA
About the Workshop
Urban development in China and the US presents many similar challenges in meeting the economic, environmental and social needs of present and future generations. The China-US Professional Workshop for Regional Sustainable Development brings together Chinese and American leaders and professionals in municipal government, planning, development, and design for an intensive exchange. The non-profit exchange program has seed funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education through the University of Washington, and sponsorship from King County, Washington, and the Seattle Sustainable Development Training Institute.
The program introduces practical tools and policies for local sustainable development, as well as expert insight on fundamental differences in politics, social structures, law, and economics of urbanization in the two countries. Participants will have a unique opportunity to work together on solutions to actual development cases they bring to the exchange, and to address such questions as “How can new approaches to regulatory as well as collaborative processes encourage these solutions?” No other program offers this combination of expertise and interaction.
Why now?
At no time in history have Chinese and American practitioners and investors been given the opportunity to have such a significant impact on current and future development. With climatically triggered natural disasters, economic crises of global dimensions, and other disruptions looming, it is time to take stock and create new solutions.
This couldn't be a better time for firms
in the US Northwest experienced and interested in sustainable practices
and/or in Chinese development to make connections and grow solution-based
relationships with their Chinese counterparts and policy experts. At the
same time, it is an excellent opportunity for Chinese practitioners to
provide on-the-ground insight and to meet directly with US professionals
on these timely topics.
Special 2009 Theme 2009
For its first offering, the program will include a special theme of sustainable
disaster recovery. The earthquake of May 2008 in Sichuan Province altered
the face of development planning in China. In the months since the earthquake,
discussions of sustainability and resilience inevitably now also consider
how disasters can both be mitigated and at the same time present an opportunity
for better development models. As Sichuan Province's sister state in the
US, Washington professionals, local governments, civic organizations and
businesses are well-situated to learn from and participate in the earthquake
recovery process in Sichuan.
