Thursday July 27th: Arrive London; travel to Swanage

Meet at Crowne Plaza hotel (Heathrow)

Stay at Leeson House, Swanage

 

 

Friday July 28th: Swanage area

 

Route from Leeson House to Studland/Ballard Down:

                A351 to Swanage

B3351 to Studland

Park in National Trust car park

 

Morning activities: Walk across Ballard Down to Old Harry rocks

Topics: Coastal geomorphology, geology and landscape

 

Route to from Ballard Down to Durlston Country Park:

                B3351 through Swanage to Durlston

 

Afternoon activities: visit Durlston Country Park, ranger talk/walk on country park management at 2 pm followed by viewing Portland limestone workings and buildings in the park

Topics: Managing and conserving natural areas, economic geology

 

Stay at Leeson House Field Centre, Swanage

 

 

Saturday July 29th: Isle of Purbeck and Kimmeridge Bay area

 

Morning activities: To be decided

 

Route from Leeson House to Kimmeridge Bay

                A351 to Corfe Castle

                Left (west) turn onto minor road to Church Knowle and Kimmeridge

 

Afternoon activities: visit Kimmeridge Bay to study Sedimentology in the field; low tide at 3pm

Sunday July 30th: Lulworth Cove

 

Route from Leeson House to Lulworth Cove

                Left on minor road to Lulworth via Church Knowles and Lulworth Camp           

 

Morning activities: Hike to Durdle Door, visit World heritage Center, visit Stair Hole

Topics: coastal geomorphology, structural geology

 

Afternoon activities: View stratigraphic section around cove, visit fossil forest (if time); low tide at 3.20pm

Monday July 31st: Portland and Chesil Beach; travel to Lyme Regis

 

Morning activities: visit Tout Quarry and viewpoint for Chesil Beach

Morning activities: Free time in Lyme Regis, 10:00 visit to Dinosaurland fossil museum

Topics: Historical geology, paleontology

 

Route from Lyme Regis to Charmouth:

Minor road south to coast

 

Lunch: noon meeting with Anjana Khatwa (World heritage Site education officer) at Charmouth

 

Afternoon: 1:30 – 3:30 guided walk/talk on the paleontology at Charmouth with time to hunt for fossils afterwards

Wednesday August 2nd: Lyme Regis and Burton Bradstock

 

Morning activities: Logging rocks of the Lias at Lyme Regis

Topics: paleoecology and sedimentology

Afternoon activities: Viewing sea cliffs at Burton Bradstock/West Bay

Thursday August 3rd: Beer caves, Seaton and Sidmouth area

 

Route from Lyme Regis to Beer:

Morning activities: Visit Beer Quarry Caves (tour starts at 10 am), view Seaton cliffs

Topics: Mining geology, structural geology

 

Route from Seaton to Sidmouth:

Afternoon: View Triassic rocks at Sidmouth

Topics: Sedimentology and stratigraphy

Friday August 4th: Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth

 

Route from Lyme Regis to Budleigh Salterton

Morning activities: pebble beds and Triassic rocks at Budleigh Salterton Cliffs;

Topics: Coastal geomorphology, Stratigraphy, Sedimentology

 

Route to Exmouth:

                East along promenade

 

Early afternoon activities: Hike to Orcombe Point (end of World Heritage coast)

Topics: Stratigraphy, Historical geology, Geotourism

 

Possible visit to Lyme Regis Philpot Museum to view exhibits on early fossilists and history of geology

Saturday August 5th: Bath

 

Morning activities: Travel to Bath (approximately 1h 45 mins) visit Roman baths

Topics: history, architecture, geology and culture

 

Afternoon activities: free time in Bath

 

Stay at Woodberry Down Outdoor Centre, Lyme Regis

 

 

August 6th: travel to Oxford, lunch in Cheddar

 

Morning activities: travel to Cheddar (approximately 2 hours); walk in Cheddar gorge, lunch at traditional English pub

 

Afternoon activities: drive to Oxford (approximately 2 hours)

 

Stay at Oxford Youth Hostel

 

 

 

August 7th: London

 

Morning activities: bus to London; visit Natural History and Geology Museums

Topics: paleontology and general geology

 

Afternoon activities: free time in London

 

Stay at Oxford Youth Hostel

 

August 8th: Oxford

 

Morning activities: free time in Oxford

 

Afternoon activities: visit university museum

Topics: History of science, paleontology, sedimentology

 

Stay at Oxford Youth Hostel

 

 

August 9th: Travel to Heathrow

Vehicles will arrive at Heathrow at approximately noon

 

August 28th: Individual meetings to discuss independent projects (sign up with Cheryl)

 

August 30th: Trip debriefing, time to work on presentations

 

September 1st: Presentation of independent projects
