Hylebos Creek Watershed

The Hylebos Creek is part of the Hylebos watershed. The watershed's headwaters are located in the highly urbanized city of Federal Way. The stream consists of two main branches- west and east, the former further divided into three forks. The stream has been channeled and rerouted in several areas. Several man-made retention ponds control the flow as it makes it way through the city. As the stream flows to its' Commencement Bay inlet it is channeled even more extensively through the cities of Milton and Fife. Historical maps of the 18,000 acre Hylebos watershed contained over 25 miles of streams, 11 named lakes, and many smaller unnamed lakes. Now the same area contains only about 25% of that surface water due to filling, channelizing, and underground piping of the waters.

More Hylebos Watershed History

On Friday April 27, 2002 our class visited eight sites along the Hylebos creek to do water quality analysis. Six teams of two people each were sent to specific areas of the creek to characterize the health of the stream. Water quality tests and physical characteristics of the sites were documented from the headwaters in Federal Way to the lower watershed in Fife.
