ORDER ANURA

Family Ascaphidae - tailed frog

Western Tailed Frog

These frogs have slender bodies with little webbing between the toes.

This male is in breeding condition, with an enlarged tail-like cloaca & keratinization on the chin, chest & arms.

ORDER ANURA

Family Ascaphidae - tailed frog

Western Tailed Frog

Its outermost hind toe (to the right) is thicker/wider than the other toes.

These tadpoles have large suction disk mouths and a streamlined body to cope with life in fast-flowing water.

ORDER ANURA

Family Pelobatidae - spadefoot toad

Great Basin Spadefoot

They have wide, flat bodies & short legs. They have bumpy skin covered with concentrations of poison glands, but no parotid gland.

Note the 1 black, sharp-edged spade on inner surface of hind feet.

ORDER ANURA

Family Bufonidae - true toad

Western Toad

Note the large parotid glands & warty skin. They also have wide bodies & relatively short legs.

They have two metatarsal tubercles (large keratinized knobs) on hind feet.

ORDER ANURA

Family Hylidae - treefrog

Pacific Chorus Frog

They have slender bodies & legs with long toes.

This species has round toe pads wider than the toes & intercalated discs at the last toe joint.

ORDER ANURA

Family Ranidae - true frog

Northern Red-legged Frog

They have dorsolateral folds. In life, they have bright red coloring on abdomen & legs.

The extensive webbing on their hind feet is stepped down along the inner edges of toes more than the Spotted frog's webbing.

ORDER ANURA

Family Ranidae - true frog

Columbia Spotted Frog

They have dorsolateral folds & unevely edged black spots on the back often have light centers. Their hind legs are relatively short compared to other Ranidae.

They have more extensive webbing of the hind toes, i.e. less stepped down, than the other ranids seen in lab.

ORDER ANURA

Family Ranidae - true frog

Northern Leopard Frog

Their dorsolateral folds extend full length of trunk. The body is bright green or tan with larger & smoother edged brown or black oval spots than spotted frogs. The spots also have light borders.

The webbing on their hind feet does not extend to the tips of the toes - compare to webbing in spotted & red-legged.

ORDER ANURA

Family Ranidae - true frog

Bullfrog

They lack the dorsolateral fold that is characteristic of most of the family.

They have very large eardrums that are partly surrounded by a fold or ridge.
