Final Project Options

Option One

You will work on the website of a community-based non-profit organization—choosing from the options presented by the Carlson Center during the first week of class. You will commit a minimum of 20 hours to this organization over the course of the quarter, working with organization staff to research, write, and design a section of the organization's web site. Your service learning experience will focus on developing a quality web product for the organization.

If you are given design control over the organization website, you may continue to develop this site for your final project. Your work will go through at least two reviews with the organization staff before being added to the organization's web site (pending approval from the organization).

If you do not have design control over the organization website, your final project will involve redesigning the organization website (or a portion thereof) to address a different purpose and/or audience than is targeted in the original. Your work will go through at least two reviews with the organization staff and may inform further development of the organization website.

Option Two

You will engage in direct service with a community based organization—choosing from the options presented by the Carlson Center during the first week of class. Students will commit to completing 20 hours of direct service to this organization over the course of the quarter. Your service learning experience will focus on the work of the organization.

Students' final projects for the quarter will involve developing a website that reflects and responds to their direct service experience. This website should take a form (artistic, historical perspective, political action, etc.) or mixed form that best serves the purpose(s) the student determines to be central to communicating salient features of their experience to the intended audience, and can include a link to the organization's website and relevant resources related to the work of the organization. Your work will go through at least two reviews between the organization and the Carlson Center, and will (upon approval of the Carlson Center) be added to the Carlson Center's website as an enhancement to their Word on the Street project.
