Quiz #3, May 8                                                                                         Name:_________________________

1)  What is the difference between co-generation and combined-cycle power generation?

Co-generations uses waste heat for many different processes, such as space heating or drying.  Combined-cycle power generation is a two-cycle electricity generation process that uses the heat from the first cycle to run a second cycle.

2)  In the pyramid below, fill in the spaces with the terms efficiency, fuel switching, and conservation in order of importance.  This is like the food pyramid, so the approach to transportation policy that is most important should be in the largest space, and the approach that is least important in the smallest space.  List one reason why Stephen prioritizes in this order.

3)  Which sector in the US uses the largest amount of energy?

                Industry

4)  What is the rated power capacity of Washington State?

A.     <500 MW

B.     Between 500 and 5000 MW

C.     >5000 MW

5)  Is the average power of Washington State greater or less than the rated power, and what makes it so?

The average power is less than the rated power because the plants cannot run at capacity all of the time and the load may not require them to do so.

6)  What are the three main purposes of Three Gorges Dam?

                Flood control, electricity production, navigation

7)  The Columbia River Dams were justified as having more than three purposes.  List one purpose of the Columbia River Dams that is different than the main purposes of Three Gorges Dam.

                        Irrigation, recreation
