Digitizing with loggerpc.aml

ATOOL is a directory containing several AMLs and related programs.  loggerpc.aml is an AML that provides a menu window interface instead of requiring multiple commands to be entered by hand.  Once you figure it out, it can greatly simplify the digitizing process.   Alec Arntzen and Luke Rogers are the creators.  You can find a copy of it on the 2001 past project CD.  Once you have the file, create a folder c:/wksp and put atool in this.  Make sure to copy the entire atool directory.  There are additional files (such as loggerpc.menu) that are needed for loggerpc.aml to run.

Loggerpc.aml was developed as a way to digitize profiles into arc in situations where a DEM is not available.  Luke Rogers has written other amls that handle this conversion if a DEM is used in the analysis.  With loggerpc.aml, nodes and arcs can be attributed with information such as rigging height, payload, full or partial suspension, etc.

From Arc:

·        Arc: &wo c:/wksp

sets the work space assuming that c:/wksp already exists

·        Arc: &atool c:/wksp/atool

tells Arc where to find atool

·        Arc: &amlpath c:/wksp/atool/aml

tells Arc where to find the aml file – this will be included in the atool file

·        Arc: &meunupath c:/wksp/atool/menu

tells Arc where to find the menu file – this will be included in the atool file

·        Arc: ae

                        opens ArcEdit

From ArcEdit:

·        ArcEdit: &r loggerpc.aml

opens up the menu window that you will be working out of – you must type the name you choose for the file you are creating

·        if you are just starting click yes for new coverage

·        choose the appropriate tic coverage - you should already have a coverage called ticcov that has tic values and their real world locations – we chose this for tic coverage

·        choose the digitizer type that you are using

·        now you should be in the Digitize LoggerPC window

From the Digitize LoggerPC window

·        mape ____

sets the map extent equal to a certain coverage

(mape * will allow you to input the map extent with the digitizer or mouse)

·        ef arc

this sets you up for adding arcs as apposed to other types of entries

·        ef node

this sets you up for adding nodes as apposed to other types of entries

·        click on digitizer as the input method

·        click on register map to set your tics

·        center the digitizer puck over the tic mark, enter in the tic number using the puck key pad, press A on the puck, press # on the puck – you have now entered in your first tic – you must enter at least four tics – once this is done press 0 and A to finish

·        to enter points with the mouse you will need to change the input method to mouse

·        backgrounds covers can be brought up for reference – these covers will show up on the view but will not be able to be edited – you must already have these coverages in your workspace for this to work – click on background and choose the appropriate cover and colors

·        click on add arcs to start adding arcs

·        the Arc window will display a menu list of functions for the puck keypad – each arc must start and end with a node – the points in between will be vertex

·        if you are digitizing profiles for a landing with a central tower, set the snap distance  on the Digitize LoggerPC menu.  That way all of the profiles in that fan will share the same node for the landing.
