In
these essays, I am particularly interested in your thoughts
and reactions to the concepts and issues that are raised in
the readings. It is an opportunity for you to reflect and
process the material, and to develop your own view on these
issues. Therefore, do not simply reiterate what is in the
readings but describe your reactions to, and reflections on,
the material.
The Nature and
Scope of Environmental Psychology
1. What is environmental
psychology? What do you think are its unique qualities or
greatest strengths? How might this approach help you in your
chosen profession?
2. Of the various
theories that Gifford identifies in the textbook, is there
any one or two that you found particularly compelling - or
problematic? If so, how? Did any help you to see the environment
in a different way?
3. In the Gifford
essay, “Making a difference: Some ways that environmental
psychology has improved the world,” the author highlights
a series of research findings in different categories. Which
category or study struck you the most? Why?
4. What did Dell
Upton mean by the terms "scene," "seen"
and unseen?" How are they related? What is the main point
of his essay?
