Ling 461: Assignment 5
- Chapter 4, exercise I: Discuss how the differences between complements
and adjuncts discussed in the chapter can be used to account for the
grammaticality contrasts given in (3)-(7), based on the assumption that
of the riots is a complement of discussion, while
in the bar is an adjunct. Your answer should make reference to
the structural differences between complements and adjuncts in the model.
- Chapter 4, exercise IV:
- Draw trees for (1a) and (1b) showing the structural difference
that follows if we call the bracketed S in (1a) a complement and the
one in (1b) a modifier. Use a triangle to abbreviate the internal
structure of the S, but otherwise be explicit.
- Present three pieces of evidence which support that structural
distinction. Each piece of evidence should consist of a contrast between
two sentences, one modeled on (1a) and one modeled on (1b).
- Discuss why the examples in (3) would appear to argue against
the structural difference motivated so far in this problem.
- Discuss how the definition in (4) can be used to make the data in
(3) consistent with the analysis (and therefore the rest of your evidence).
- Chapter 4, exercise V.
