Homework 3

Due Friday October 19 at 9:30 (in class)

1. As seen in class, both the stress and the strain vary linearly through the cross section (from top to bottom) of a rectangular beam subjected to a bending moment if the stress-strain relation is assumed to be linear elastic.

a) Assuming the strain distribution remains linear, sketch the stress distribution you would expect to see if the stress-strain relation is assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic (also assume that the applied bending moment is sufficiently high to cause some yielding in the beam).

b) Repeat part a), but assume the stress-strain relation to be elastic-plastic with linear hardening.

2. Dowling Problem 4.5

3. Dowling Problem 4.16
