Oceanography 101, Autumn 2006
Extra Credit Cruise Field Trip instructions
Preparation
Be sure to bring the following:
- Warm clothes
- Rain jacket and hat (pants too if you
like)
- Sunglasses just in case
- Sturdy, non-skid, closed-toed shoes or
boots (no sandals)
- Towel and changes of clothes, shoes
& socks if you wish
- Notebook or clipboard & note
paper, sharp pencils (ink runs in the rain)
- Snack and/or water (breakfast and
lunch will be available on the ship)
- Backpack or duffel to carry all this
Arrival
- Please meet at the west parking lot of
the Oceanography Teaching Building http://www.washington.edu/home/maps/southwest.html?63,68,457,901
by 6:30 AM. Drive south on 15th Avenue NE next to campus,
cross Pacific Street at the stoplight (or turn off Pacific onto 15th
Avenue NE southbound), and follow the road as it curves toward the
east. You will see a cul-de-sac on the right, and the parking lot if
off of that.
- You can park on the street, in the lot
where we meet, or on the east side of the Ocean Teaching Building.
Parking is free on campus on Sundays.
- We cannot wait for latecomers because
crew will be waiting for us at Pier 66 downtown.
- Please notify me ASAP if you cannot
make the trip. If you canÕt make it but donÕtÕ
know until Sunday morning, please call my cell phone 206-713-0246.
- We will be driving 4 vans. We will
need 3 volunteers with driverÕs licenses to drive in addition to
me.
On the Cruise
- Breakfast will be available once we
board the ship before beginning work. Lunch will also be served. Please
notify me ASAP if you need a vegetarian or vegan meal.
- We will divide into three groups to
conduct three activities at three different locations (stations) off
Seattle. We plan to return to UW through the Ship Canal by about 5 PM.
- You will have a written exercise
sheet, but it will not be graded. As long as you pay attention and
participate fully in the activities, you will receive full (extra)
credit for the cruise.
