Textbook
I have
adopted Oceanography, An
Invitation to Marine Science 5th Edition by Tom Garrison for the
course. Print copies are on order at the University Bookstore. Few used
copies will be available. Students also have the option to order an
electronic (PDF) version of the textbook directly from the publisher, Thomson Higher Education, at a significant
discount. The electronic version can be ordered either by chapter
or on its entirety. We will be using portions of all the chapters, so
it is cheaper to order the whole eBook rather than ordering by chapter.
NOTE: Please carefully read the
Thomson FAQ
page to learn the terms and mechanics of buying the electronic
version of the textbook.

decided, maximum five including final.) Required orientation
Friday 9/29. Optional office hours remaining Fridays. Internet students
also select one "quiz" section strictly for
assignment to TA. Internet quiz sections do not meet.
CAUTION: Please be clear that
the internet section is not intended to be a full-service online
course. It shadows the lecture section using lectures, audio,
assignments, and a daily diary posted online. TA's are available online
and at office hours. Do not expect these amenities to serve as a 100%
alternative to attending class. They are intended as a convenience for
students who consider themselves able to succeed in the class without
attending. The internet section should require more work, not less,
than the lecture section to achieve the same grade. The average grade
in the internet section is typically about 0.2 grade points lower
than that of the lecture section.
