MONDAYS:

• The 4th Monday Palliative Care Track students will meet as a group from 10:00 am to 11:30 am in E-304. The focus of these facilitated sessions is:

1. Self care/resiliency
2. Best Practice Model- on the 4th Monday, we will discuss Video Series 1 & Video Series 2.
3. Help students develop their skills at summarizing patient/family values and goals and critically appraising if the current care plan optimally supports the summarized patient/family story
4. Spiritual Care
5. Explore other areas of educational interest

• Monday afternoons are for Clerkship didactics (Standardized Patient Exercise, Guided Loss Exercise, Rehab lectures, etc.) and free time for other learning opportunities:

  • Assigned case write-up patient and family.   In collaboration with hospice or palliative care team members you will choose a patient with a life limiting, chronic illness where integration of palliative care is appropriate.   You will be required to complete a comprehensive Case Write-up on this patient and present this case to fellow students on the final Friday of the class.
  • Interviewing the patient and family during at least one home visit soliciting their perspective and in particular what medical care bests supports them in living with their chronic illness.
  • Completing the palliative care specific questions to the comprehensive case write up here
  • Self Study : 1) Working on the palliative care website to complete required readings, videos, visit summary forms and other online assignments and 2) Making additional independent home visits with patients/families per student opportunity, and learning style

TUESDAY-FRIDAY:

• Tuesday through Friday students will report to their clinical sites, which include home hospice visits, inpatient hospice facilities, inpatient palliative care, outpatient radiation oncology with a focus on palliative care, patient visits with providers from various disciplines (Social Work, Spiritual Care, Nursing).
