Course Syllabus

  • This is available for purchase at the South Campus Bookstore.
  • You are highly encouraged to purchase a 3-ring binder and 10 numbered, tabbed dividers. Once you have your syllabus, place it in the binder and use the tabbed dividers to divide the syllabus into weeks, so that all the material for a particular week can be found under that week's number.

Course Assumptions

  1. All students know how to perform a MEDLINE search.
  2. All students will read all assigned readings prior to the class where the readings will be discussed.
  3. All students have the textbook used in the biostatistics course taken last spring.

Grading Structure

  • Participation 25%
  • Presentation 25%
  • Evidence table draft 10%
  • Formulary monograph 15%
  • Final exam 25%

Formulary Monograph template

Click here to download the formulary monograph template as a Microsoft Word document. You will replace brackets and bracketed information with text that you write. You will use as the issues for the formulary the questions as outlined in the syllabus on pages 8 and 9.

Click here and here to view a sample evidence table The first page is the reference list and a place to list your name. The second two pages are the evidence table itself. This information is on an old drug (it was written years ago by a student who is now a faculty member), but is a good example of a well-constructed evidence table.

Final Exam

The final exam will be held on the first day of finals. This year it is Tuesday, December 15 (the date/time on MyUW courses is not correct) from 12:30-2:20 in room T-439. You need bring only a pencil to this exam. The information on statistical tests found in the back of your syllabus will be available for you to view at the exam. You will be provided with 4 sheets of paper on which only prompts (e.g., title:, authors:, etc) will be typed. You will fill in the information after these prompts with your outline and evaluation of the paper you are given in class to read, outline, and evaluate. The last two pages of your syllabus outline the elements you will be asked to write as well as the point allocation for each element.
