A student wrote:

For problem #42 in chapter 11 of RHK, is it necessary to compensate for the force that the cat exerts on the sled when it jumps off of it?

Prof. Seidler responds:

It is necessary to define your system in such a way that there are no external forces. In such a situation, you can use the law of conservation of momentum rahter than dealing directly with the time-dependent force between the sled(s) and the cat.
