{"id":847,"date":"2017-08-15T06:59:08","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T06:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/?p=847"},"modified":"2017-08-15T06:59:08","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T06:59:08","slug":"global-issues-require-global-enforcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/global-issues-require-global-enforcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Global issues require global enforcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After reading about the many land deals that have occurred recently, I began to notice that the overriding theme seemed to be that these \u201cland grabs\u201d were detrimental.\u00a0 Which may be the case, however, these countries who are acquiring land may have motives less devious than originally expected.\u00a0 City, state and federal leader\u2019s jobs are to act in the best interest of their people. \u00a0These land grabs could simply be countries protecting their own self-interests first.\u00a0 If the growing number of people in India\u2019s didn\u2019t think their leader\u2019s actions were going to provide for them in the future, they would replace those leaders.\u00a0 With a skyrocketing population, a warming climate and the prospects of less available water it is understandable why India would want to purchase land to protect their future interests.\u00a0 It is hard to argue that they won\u2019t likely need that land in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-876 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nile-dams-159x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nile-dams-159x300.jpg 159w, https:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nile-dams-542x1024.jpg 542w, https:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nile-dams-624x1179.jpg 624w, https:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/nile-dams.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So if the\u00a0people of India care about the wellbeing of Africans and every other human, just not as much as their own, can we blame them?\u00a0 Our natural instincts have us programmed to protect our pack or family first.\u00a0 This group dynamic likely helped the earliest humans to survive and flourish.\u00a0 Not to say that India doesn\u2019t care about the people of Africa or the rest of the world, but if they\u2019re forced to choose who goes hungry it\u2019s unlikely they volunteer.\u00a0 While it is unknown if we will ever get to that point, it is certainly well within the range of scenarios as we move forward into our future climate that we are shaping.\u00a0 Bottom line is the residents of the country selling land need to see some of the profit or be included in some way.\u00a0 Unfortunately, we know this doesn\u2019t always happen.\u00a0 What good are the World Bank and U.N.
