{"id":1346,"date":"2018-05-07T05:54:13","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T05:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385s18\/?p=1346"},"modified":"2018-05-07T05:54:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T05:54:13","slug":"why-is-carls-jr-using-sex-to-entice-me-to-eat-a-burger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.washington.edu\/ps385s18\/2018\/05\/07\/why-is-carls-jr-using-sex-to-entice-me-to-eat-a-burger\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is Carl\u2019s Jr. using SEX to entice \u201cME\u201d to eat a burger?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After watching countless Fabio cameos for \u2018I can\u2019t believe it\u2019s not butter!<strong>\u00ae<\/strong> \u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xszIaNpYILY\">commercials<\/a>, I started thinking more about how gender and aesthetic beauty is playing a role in food commercials.<\/p>\n<p>Why did a margarine producing companying need a <em>gorgeous <strong>man<\/strong><\/em> to sell its products?\u2019 Well, there were many answers, but during my contemplative time, I thought of a different question:<\/p>\n<h3>What does the <strong><em>female<\/em><\/strong> equivalent of Fabio sell in today\u2019s food industry?<\/h3>\n<h1>Apparently Sex\u2026 and burgers.<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ML8fmcHGEbY\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ML8fmcHGEbY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I eat burgers! I live next to an In-N-Out in California! But this add was NOT made for me, or for a number of demographics. It was pointedly, and uncomfortably directed at men.<\/p>\n<p>Why? <em><u>Well, supposedly meat and burgers is a man\u2019s food. <\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><u>Well, I never got that memo.<\/u><\/em> This commercial was raunchier (and better directed) than most pornos \u2013 they even somehow made the act of eating a burger look sexy! It\u2019s so unrealistic. This is usually what I end up looking like after eating a burger if I don\u2019t have the proper amount of napkins:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.wonderhowto.com\/img\/64\/20\/63527367153387\/0\/perfect-way-eat-burger-with-no-mess-sticky-fingers-according-science.1280x600.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for messy burger eating\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What got me so uncomfortable over this contemplative practice was that the commercial in question was an ad run during the SuperBowl, where millions of people (including impressionable children) saw sex dripping from every inch of that juicy burger. I don\u2019t know how long this trend of sexifying food has gone on for \u2013 looking at Fabio\u2019s commercials, it\u2019s safe to say it\u2019s been going on for a minimum of twenty years. But it\u2019s becoming more intensified and risqu\u00e9. The whole experience made me appreciate how much <em>gender, sex, <\/em>and (subjective) <em>beauty<\/em> plays a role in how food is catered to \u201cus\u201d and how that later becomes internalized within ourselves and our society.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After watching countless Fabio cameos for \u2018I can\u2019t believe it\u2019s not butter!\u00ae \u2019 commercials, I started thinking more about how gender and aesthetic beauty is playing a role in food commercials.
