My interest in doing the work is to explore the boundaries of human perception. When trying to make ourselves relatable, we tend to homogenize our culture, interests, and desires. We want to relate with each other, yet in our increasingly global environment it becomes harder to define ourselves outside of social constructs and aside from capitalistic terms.
So I asked myself how take the conversation and turn it inward. It is less about my reflection in the public eye and more about my perception of the public. I wanted to identify the formations of American culture that leave me with a feeling of disenfranchisement. Is it the institutions, our government or consumerism? And realized that it is all of the above. I began to explore at what level does my participation in social constructs conflict with my ideals as an individual, and how can I use this adverseness as motivation for change.
Socialization is an integral part of life. Memories express theses interactions using a landscape of perception. My work tries to show how the disruptions have affected my creative process. i.e. I am admiring a good looking flower in nature and my view of it is blurred by some one walking by. My association of the plant and the person has created a new realistic experiance. When at first I had intended on just viewing the flower, something unpredictable occurs, I am challenged to process this experience in a new way.
