“For my conceptual project, I decided to compare something so familiar: the pain of college tuition. Although higher education is extremely valuable, the cost is unimaginable for most people and for most students, the effect or the cost on their future is hard to grasp. Here I have attempted to visually display the average cost of college tuition for a handful of professions and how many years that they will be paying off their tuition.”

“I chose to focus on body image and perceptions for this project, because it is incredibly relevant to our society with the growth of social media, advertising, and other corporation-powered media outlets. All ages are exposed to the media, so I wanted to highlight the control media has on body image across three age groups. In doing this, I hope to reveal the unrealistic standards women are pressured to emulate, no matter their age range. I asked all three women to share with me parts of a woman’s body they feel pressures from the media to achieve, and we searched for examples together. I chose to shoot these impossible standards within the personal space they get ready in. I collected statements from all three women, to present an intimate look into their lives, media pressures, and body image.”

“From the beating of Rodney King to the murder of Trayvon Martin, black people in the United States have always been mistreated. I want to shine light on a problem that still hasn’t been solved… It’s the twenty first century and we are still having this conversation. In fact, most people of color who are murdered by law enforcement are of no harm to them, carrying no weapons. ‘We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.’ –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

“In 2012, I started my photography project, “Dimashqi Lens.” I have devoted myself and time to document all events have happened in Damascus and its rural. Most of the photos were taken in dangerous zones and areas where regime doesn’t give any access to any kind of media… In my project, I am trying to show some of the identities of Syrians who were killed while doing their work and trying to help rescue others who were living under siege in these cities. I am focusing on students who were in school when their school was bombed. Second, photographers and reporters who sacrificed their lives to document what has done to their cities and people. Finally, doctors, who were trying to give life to others and got killed. I tried to focus on the materials they had on them when they were killed.”

AUDIO STORIES

BISMCS 343 Community Radio Journalism, Autumn ’17 – Amoshaun Toft

Isabel Conrad, Static on the U-WaveMP3 (5.1 MB)

“U-Wave radio, University of Washington Bothell’s on campus radio station, serves as the community’s voice. U-Wave had been approved for a Low Power FM Radio license by the FCC, which due to the limited availability on the FM dial, made this a once in a lifetime opportunity. But in the end, U-Wave was not able to get enough administrative support and lost the opportunity to become an FM radio station. To report more on the subject, Isabel Conrad.

Julie Grimm, SPACE 101.1 FMMP3 (3.0 MB)

“Magnuson Park is one of Seattle’s outdoor playgrounds. But besides having waterfront views and endless acres to explore, it houses hundreds of low income families. Space 101.1, the Park’s local radio station, has come alongside the people that live in the park to offer them a platform to communicate with each other. Julie Grimm talks with several of the stations volunteers and a community member about how the radio station is helping outreach to the community in the park.”

Linh Hoang, Rainier Valley RadioMP3 (3.5 MB)

“Radio has been around for years, yet you might think you basically have two choices on the FM dial these days: you can turn on a station covering the top 40 songs of the month and hear the newest Taylor Swift song, or you can turn on a country station to hear a slightly less new Taylor Swift song. Then between 2 or 3 songs you will have to listen to a Shane Company commercial OVER and OVER again about how awesome their diamond rings are. Well, however, among those stations there are some low power FM noncommercial radio stations that are active in YOUR community. Reporter Linh Hoang went to Seattle to find out more about one of the new local radio stations.”

Makenna Martyn, Programming Innovations for SeattleMP3 (2.5 MB)

“With roughly 13 miles of terrain separating Rainier Valley and Sand Point, these greater Seattle area communities can experience a feeling of divide caused by many different factors. Reflecting these communities ethnically diverse neighborhoods, radio stations KVRU in Rainier Valley and SPACE 101.1 at Magnuson Park in Sand Point hope to introduce new programming that can help aid this divide and bring these communities a better sense of fellowship. Journalist Makenna Martyn investigates what’s in store and at stake for these community radio stations.”

Sydney VanWell, Changing the Conversation on Homelessness on KODXMP3 (4.0 MB)

“KODX 96.9 FM is a new community radio station located in the Seattle area. Their goal as a station is to expand their content by covering important social issues. Since the beginning, KODX have spent an immense amount of time focusing on the homelessness issues occurring in the Seattle area. They also collaborate with other organizations to produce and gather more content for their stories. Alongside these collaborations, these organizations have been opted an opportunity to produce their own show with KODX. That is exactly what one organization is currently working on. With KODX as a viable forum they’ll discuss the social issues they want to cover with the hope of providing a voice to their community. Here is Sydney VanWell with the story.”

Haonan Zheng, Radio Will Never DieMP3 (4.3 MB)

“Along with the development of new media, there are more and more streaming services and application appear in today’s society. According to the Pew Research Center, only 33 percent of Americans get news by listening radio in 2012. Some studies argue that radio will die in the next couple years because next generation will not listen to radio anymore, is it true? As journalist Haonan reports, radio offers something that streaming services don’t have, and community radio can provide some function that other new media don’t have also.”
