Guide to understanding primary sources:
-Source: novel? personal account? article from a local gazeteer? What is the significance of these sources to the historian? How can we approach these sources critically (in other words, how to distinguish what is real and what is not?)
-Author: background, worldview of the author?
-Time period: when was the text written? what were the historical circumstances at the time?
-Close-reading: close analysis of themes, particular passages; detailed questions on why the author asks certain questions and how he answers them, why he emphasizes certain themes more than others.
-Looking at the bigger picture: What do these sources tell us about what is going on during the time period under study?

To review primary sources, please refer to Class Notes.
