Maria Garrido (migarrid@u.washington.eduLEAD TA is a PhD student interested in the use of the Internet as a tool of economic development and social change for underdeveloped communities in Latin America. She is currently working on a project trying to map and understand how social networks are created and maintained in cyberspace and the how these networks are empowering social movements, particularly the Zapatista Movement in Chiapas, Mexico.

Kelly Aldrich (kaldrich@u.washington.edu) is a first-year M.A. student doing a concurrent M.A./J.D. degree with the law school.  She is interested in Mass Media Law in general, with a focus on First Amendment issues.  She is, as yet, undecided as to a specific thesis topic, but plans to trace a media law issue through history to detail how the Supreme Court has dealt with and, perhaps, changed their interpretations of the First Amendment.

 
Ying-Chia "Hazel" Lin (yclin@u.washington.edu) is a 
second-year PhD student interested in new media study, 
critical theories and visual culture. She is particularly 
interested in the role of the Internet in the process 
of globalization. Currently, she is working on a project 
about how national and ethnic identities 
are represented and constructed through multilingual 
websites.
 
Nicole Kim (yjkim121@u.washington.edu) is a second 
year M.A. student.  Her interest is in international 
relations, particularly in how the mass media factor into 
the communication process in the international arena. 
She is currently working with Professor Lau in developing 
and promoting a new program, Master's of Communications 
in Digital Media.  She is also working on her Master's thesis, 
investigating the existence of the concept of "International 
Media Echo" to study the role of media in international
communication.
 
Irina Gendelman (irinag@u.washington.edu) is a second year
M.A. student interested in the uses of public space for 
communication. She has a background in comparative literature
and mural painting. Irina is currently working on a comparative
study of the governance of communicative action in urban
public spaces. For her thesis she is examining various uses of
building walls as a medium of communication.
