This is an engaging Engineering Open House experiment that introduces electrochemistry and thin film optics by converting dull grey titanium into colorful jewelry via electrochemcial anodization.  The target audience is middle school, but all ages seem to enjoy it.  See the overview poster as well as a more detailed step-by-step article published in the Education Issue of Interface Magazine.

Build a Rainbow

An experiment developed as part of the outreach activities for the Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Washington.  In the experiment, electrodeposition of a thin film produces varying interference colors.  It is geared for middle to high school ages.  See the published article in the Education Issue of Interface Magazine.
