Volunteer Opportunities

Many NGO’s that were discussed earlier have individual opportunities for volunteering within their organization and community participation is vital for service continuation. The best way to find a volunteer opportunity is to contact the organization that you are interested in working for and they will set you up. Some of the international organizations even need people to travel to other countries to work there. Many organizations also offer internships for credit or experience only. The more broad the organization is (international v. local) the usually more competitive positions are. Interns will frequently do research work, administrative support, work directly in camps, do public relations, and other duties. These are usually on a need only basis but are frequently posted on their websites.

The City of Seattle offers some volunteer opportunities as well for individuals that are interested in being involved with issues on a local level. Some of these include working for libraries, serving on advisory committees for issues such as aging, women’s issues, and human rights, and helping with local neighborhood support. A list of activities can be accessed at the City of Seattle volunteer opportunities website.

Refugees are a group that cannot be neglected in terms of providing service and they must be supported to help make their life better in their new country than their origin country. People must look into human rights issues and ensure that the funding is in place to accommodate promises made to them.
