Periderm week 5-6


Periderm cells become apparent in the 5th week of development as a single layer of polygonal cells arranged as a pavement epithelium. The periderm cells overlie a single layer of keratinocytes. Microvilli are present on the amniotic fluid surface as is a coating of acid mucopolysaccharides. The periderm cells are joined by junctional complexes.
