Everyday Memorials:
goals | salvaged structures | salvaged boat | community program
+ goals:

The goal of this project is to help the community rebuild it self physically and emotionally. The layers of debris scattered through out the province of Banda Aceh are daily reminders of how much they have endured. The force of the Tsunami has displaced many cars, boats, and building fragments. The use of debris as a source of building material provides a dual purpose: it provides more materials to build with and it also provides the community the opportunity to create positive symbols from such a negative event.

In this phase of the research, two examples have been developed. One focuses on an existing Mosque and its surrounding area. The other example focuses on refurbishing a fishing boating with debris and creating new uses for the structure. By exploring these two concepts the community would be exposed to alternative uses of existing structures while creating new public amenities, with sustainable practices in mind.

Community programming is vital to the concept of Everyday Memorials. The driving force of this project is to provide communities with opportunities to develop community businesses, schools, and co-ops. By introducing innovative uses for debris and salvaged structures the community can begin rebuilding existing features, such as boats, dilapidated buildings, and landscapes into structure that provide them with the services they need. It also provides them with the opportunity to create places that allow them to heal.
