courses related to lighting. These images are examples of work that future students
may be expected to produce when taking classes for credit towards the Lighting
Design Certificate. Examples of class architectural/lighting tours are also shown.

ARCH 410 | Introduction to Architectural Photography (3/5) [Context Course]

Instructor: John Stamets

Students compose, shoot, develop, and crop black & white photographs of architecture and the urban environment. While most photography takes place in the Seattle area, students are encouraged to photograph architecture while traveling to other locations. In addition to the general architectural photography, each student chooses a building to document, including elevation, detail, and context photos.

ARCH 434 | Color and Light (3) [Context Course]

Examples of class assignments are displayed here.

Project 1: using watercolors, create a grid of varying hues with the same values (lightness/darkness).

Project 2: using the cityscape as your laboratory, find examples of color contrasts in the architecture and urban fabric of Seattle.

Project 3: In the Chapel of St. Ignatius observe not only the variety of ways that interior color is achieved through natural and artificial light, but also the
combinations and juxtapositions of color and light that are present in all parts of the chapel.

Project 4: The first color and light exploration will be done with a ping- pong ball, a "room box" and daylight. The purpose is to explore the color rendering properties of daylight at different times of the day and under different conditions, and to capture its effect on a spherical shape in a white "room".

Project 5: Construct the ‘Box Model’ using 3” cubes with a connecting plane. Apply colored paper (or use watercolor) to the surfaces in a way that distorts or changes the original appearance of the boxes through color illusion. To create a true illusion, you will need to use very subtle color variations to create (or cancel) shadows.

Project 6: For your final assignment you may choose a design project, which not only shows your knowledge of color contrast, color effect and color harmony, but also demonstrates how color may be used as a conceptual tool in design.
