Species: glandiforme
Common Names: Sea Sacs, Dead Man's Fingers, Condoms of the Sea

*Because of its distinct appearance, Halosaccion has adopted a variety of charming common names including Dead man's fingers, sea sacs, and condoms of the sea. Its most defining characteristic is its water filled sacs. Strangely enough, this species belongs to the red algae phylum even though it is usually green or brown in appearance, although some rarer forms actually appear red or purple in color. These fluid filled sacs are typically found in the rocky, mid-intertidal region of shores, anchored by their short, circular holdfasts. When pressure is applied to their sacs, these plants emit a gust of water from their pores. Predation of this plant is small, its most common predator being the common sea snail.
