MEBI 550, Winter, '05

Grading:

This is a 3-credit, graduate-level graded course. Generally speaking, anything less than a B (3.0) represents inadequate performance at the graduate level. At the other extreme, I generally only give an A (4.0) if I can find nothing to criticize in the student's work. Thus, grades in the range of B+ / A- represent very good student performance.

Grading scheme:

For Winter '05, final projects are worth 35% of your overall grade, reaction essays 15%, exercises 25%, the exam 20%, and class participation: 5%. There are four exercises and two reaction essays.

As usual, email receipt of all essays and exercises is preferred. (For organizational ease, please embed your name or initials in the file name.) The exercise grade may not be divided evenly across all 4 exercises, as some of these require more work than others. The final project will include both a written document and an oral presentation. A much more detailed grading scheme for the final project will be available later in the quarter.

Homework must be completed on-time. Because we will typically discuss the material in class, any late homeworks will be severely down-graded: At least a full grade (a B+ essay becomes a C+ essay, etc.) per day late.

Graduate school is largely about building strong communication skills. A significant portion of your grade for this course will be based on written documents and an oral presentation. Clarity and English language skills will matter.

Academic Honesty:

To prevent possible misunderstandings, students must read the University of Washington's Statement on Academic Honesty. All students are expected to follow high standards of academic honesty in all aspects of this course.
