Course Objectives
Overall Objectives
By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Summarize the associations between maternal and infant
nutrition and the health of populations.
- Describe mechanisms for developmental origins of
diseases and intergenerational outcomes associated with inadequate or
excessive dietary intake before or during pregnancy, breastfeeding and
infancy.
- Interpret nutritional needs as they are impacted by
physiological and psychological functions during pregnancy, breastfeeding and
infancy.
- Access major nutrition recommendations for pregnancy,
breastfeeding, and infant feeding.
- Explain the current state of nutritional sciences
knowledge in regards to preventing adverse outcomes in pregnancy such as small
or large for birthweight infants, diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension.
- Demonstrate use of maternal and infant nutrition
assessment tools and application of recommendations for nutrients, food
safety, feeding relationships and psychosocial aspects of nutrition
nutritional planning for women and children.
