Course Objectives

By the end of the course students will be able to:

Summarize the associations between maternal and infant nutrition and the health of populations.
Describe mechanisms for developmental origins of diseases and intergenerational outcomes associated with inadequate or excessive dietary intake before or during pregnancy, breastfeeding and infancy.
Interpret nutritional needs as they are impacted by physiological and psychological functions during pregnancy, breastfeeding and infancy.
Access major nutrition recommendations for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and infant feeding.
Explain the current state of nutritional sciences knowledge in regards to preventing adverse outcomes in pregnancy such as small or large for birthweight infants, diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension.
Demonstrate use of maternal and infant nutrition assessment tools and application of recommendations for nutrients, food safety, feeding relationships and psychosocial aspects of nutrition nutritional planning for women and children.
