Technology Information
When conducting qualitative research, you will generally need the capacity to audio record and transcribe. The following documentation details devices and software that are either free or available for checkout from the College of Education Technology Lab in Miller 424.
Olympus DM-1
- This is a small digital audio recorder. It has a good deal of functionality, including the capacity to record conference or dictation, lock files so that they are not accidentally deleted, and play back recordings at fast or slow speeds.
Olympus DM-10
- This is a newer, slightly smaller version of the DM-1. It is pocket-sized, and, like the DM-1, has the capacity to record conference or dictation, lock files so that they are not accidentally deleted, and play back at fast or slow speeds, among other features.
Express Scribe
- This is free transcription software, available for both PC and Macintosh. It is available on the lab machines in Miller 424, and is also available for download from NCH's website, at http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/. It enables playback at different speeds, as well as the use of footpedals and the ability to add bookmarks to your audio file.
