Sites in the Tahirler Survey Region
BeypazariModern provincial capital of the region founded during the Seljuk period. The early history of the settlement remains obscure, including its relationship to the Middle Byzantine sites in its vicinity (see the descriptions for Pinarcik, Uyku, and Dikmen Hoyuk (Anastasiopolis). Cliffs lining the valley on the northeastern side of Beypazari are dotted with small man-made caves of the Byzantine era, some of them with surviving frescoes. The relationship of these caves to the Byzantine cave complexes at Kilisiler and beside the Kirmir River requires further study. The local museum of Beypzari, housed in a former Ottoman mansion, contains a variety of simple marble tombstones, smaller sculptural fragments, and Roman and Byzantine coins found in the surrounding villages. Interviews with local farmers enabled us to link some of these objects back to their find spot at Dikmen Hoyuk (Anastasiopolis). The modern city of Beypzari is known for his Ottoman wooden houses and fine local style of silver jewelry. For extensive information on the city in Turkish, see the Beypazari municipal website. |
