IRAQ'S CHILDREN, US SANCTIONS, AND THE QUESTION OF JUSTICE

The talk will be followed by a wine & cheese reception, giving you a chance to meet Bert and other concerned students and faculty.

Bert Sacks was fined $10,000 in 1997 for bringing $40,000 in medical supplies to Iraq in violation of US sanctions that began in 1990 and ended with the 2003 invasion. It is estimated that about 500,000 children died in Iraq as a result of these sanctions. Sacks has publicly refused to pay the fine, and is currently petitioning the Supreme Court to hear his case against the US Treasury Department for violation of international law, the Geneva Convention, and for genocidal policies and actions against Iraqi civilian populations. Please join us for an evening discussion of the impact of inter-war US policies in Iraq and Sacks' quest to challenge these policies through the US court system. The talk will end with a forum discussion on the emotional task of facing catastrophe and finding the resources for hope in the active struggle to uphold basic human rights on an international scale.
