Flow of Wet-Bedded Glaciers

Week 1 - Seminal Basal Paper (Kristin)

Observations of Basal Sliding from our very own Blue Glacier (yes, I consider it UW's glacier not the Park Service's!)

Kamb, B. and E. LaChapelle. 1964. Direct observation of the mechanism of glacier sliding over bedrock. Journal of Glaciology 5, 159-172.

See also review by Peter Knight.

Week 2 - Hydrology (Twila, Peter)

Fountain and Walder, 1998. Water flow through temperate glacier. Focus on section 4 thru 6 (pages 307-318) and section 8 (pages 320-322).

Optional: You might also take a look at Rothlisberger's and Shreve's classic papers from the same issue of J. Glac. 1972.

Week 3 - Subglacial processes (Josh C., Adam C.)
Garry K.C. Clarke, 2005, SUBGLACIAL PROCESSES, Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Science, 2005.

Week 4 - Boreholes and water transport (Brooke)
Primary reading:

Hubbard, B.P., M.J. Sharp, I.C. Willis, M.K. Nielsen and C.C. Smart, 1995. Borehole water-level variations and the structure of the subglacial hydrological system of Haut Glacier d'Arolla, Valais, Switzerland. Journal of Glaciology, 41(139), 572-583.

Also of interest:

Gordon, S., Sharp, M., Hubbard, B., Smart, C. C., Ketterling, B., and Willis, I. C., 1998, Seasonal reorganisation of subglacial drainage inferred from measurements in boreholes:Hydrological Processes, v.12, p.105-133.

Week 5 - Hard-bedded sliding of alpine glaciers (T.J.)
*** Harper, J. T., N. F. Humphrey, W. T. Pfeffer, Two modes of accelerated sliding. GRL 2007

*** Iken, A., H. Röthlisberger, A. Flotron and W. Haeberli. 1983. The uplift of Unteraargletscher at the  beginning of the melt season - a consequence of water storage at the bed? J. Glaciol. 29: 28-47.

Week 6 - Ice Sheet Hydrology - Do we know anything?
*** Bell, R. The role of subglacial water in ice sheet mass balance

Week 7 - Sliding Theory

*** Nye 1969

We will read just Nye 1969 this week. Don't get bogged down in the math. Marc recommended these sections are the conceptually most important:

445-449; 1st para 450; 451 to eq14; bottom 452-454 (eq31); mid 454-456; 458-459.

If you're feeling up to it, Nye 1970 expands on the thoughts discussed in the 1969 paper.

Week 8 - Glacier Surges

Kamb et al., 1985. Glacier Surge Mechanism: 1982-1983 Surge of Variegated Glacier, Alaska.

You might also want to read Humphrey and Raymond, 1994 for a more glacier erosion flavor.

Week 9 - Ice Streams

Two short papers:

***Engelhardt et al., 1990. Physical Conditions at the Base of a Fast Moving Antarctic Ice Stream

***Alley et al., 1986. Deformation of till beneath ice stream B, West Antarctica.

Week 10 - Seismic Observations

Seismic observations of ice stream hydrology.

Winberry et al., 2009
