"Their Eyes Were Watching God"

This site was created by Hiedi Wurster as a project for an English 200 class at the University of Washington.  The class focused on literature from the Harlem Renaissance to emphasize close reading and critical analysis skills.   I have chosen Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God" as the focus of this site because of it's uniqueness of having a female hero.  It also stands apart by telling the African American experience through the eyes of a Black woman.  The site consists of a critical analysis page, an annotated passage page, and a bibliograpy and links page.

Both the critical analysis section and the annotated passage focus on chapter twelve and the theme of community.  The question is asked, does our protagonist, Janie, ever truly become part of a community that is steeped in folk tradition?
