Student responsibilities and activities

Working under the supervision of the attending physician, fellow and resident, students will evaluate and follow pulmonary consult patients from a variety of medical and surgical services in the hospital. These consults generally cover a range of problems including the work-up of pulmonary nodules, infiltrates, and effusions, the work-up and management of tuberculosis and the evaluation of other problems such as unexplained hypoxemia, difficulty separating a patient from the ventilator and ventilator-associated pneumonia.  The team occasionally sees consults on intubated patients on the cardiology and other services at the hospital and provides input on ventilator management and other critical care issues. Students will also gain experience reading pulmonary function tests and chest radiographs.  Students will have the opportunity to observe pulmonary procedures including bronchoscopies ,and  thoracentesis. Students do not go to outpatient pulmonary clinic but do often attend the post-clinic conference. In addition to the structured educational conferences described below, students receive teaching from both the fellow and attending physician as part of the daily work on the team. The typical day begins at 8:00 AM and continues until the team’s responsibilities have been completed in the afternoon or early evening.
