Course Description: CEE 497/ CEE 598 - Water in Arid Land
This course is a UW faculty-led study abroad program run through the UW study abroad office and sponsorded by the UW Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The course takes place on-location in the hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, with orientation classes in the Spring Quarter prior to departure. Scheduling is such that this course does not conflict with regular progress toward on-campus courses. UW students recieve 5 credits for this course. Non-UW students should check with their own institutions to confirm that credits can be transfered. The course fee is $4660 and includes tuition for the 5 credits, all academic programing, housing, and food while in Jordan. Airfare is not included in the listed cost. Financial aid is available to eligible students; these students should contact the finanacial aid office for details.

.Overview of Topics:
This course examines the engineerd water cycle in Jordan as a case study for water management in an arid environmental sciencescience students interested in learning the science and engineering aspects of water and wastewater treatment. and engineering. The program may also be of interest to water management, enviromental health and potentially political science students intersted in learning the science and engineering of water treatment.

During this program, students will study:
1. Current and historic water sources in Jordan
2. Drinking water treatment and distribution in Jordan including impacts of dry climate on treatment processes
3. Wastewater treatment in Jordan, emphasis on technologies for the warmer & more concentrated wastes encountered in arid regions
4. Efforts for reclaiming wastewater
5. Archeological evidence of water engineering in ancientcities located in Northern Jordan
6. Plans in Jordan for meeting future challenges
