ESS 511 Term Project

Those of you registered for ESS 511 will research a question based on continuum mechanics applied to a current issue in the Earth Sciences.

You will make a short (12 minute) oral presentation of your paper to the class during our scheduled final exam time slot (or another time for AGU travelers).

You will prepare and turn a short research paper in Geology or Geophysical Research Letters style. The paper will be due on the Monday after exam week (to accommodate AGU participants). You can check out GRL style by following the link (right panel) to the AGU web site.

We expect you to develop topic ideas and then an outline, as the Quarter progresses.

On Friday October 22
  • I will ask you for a 60-second verbal report on your project idea(s). I will keep time and stop you after 60 seconds.

On Friday November 05
  • I will ask you for a 60-second verbal update in class.

For Friday November 19
  • Write a one- page report outlining your term project (using some bullet points is OK). Please include at least one reference to a paper or other source that you have located.

On Monday December 13

  • We planned to hear your oral project reports in this time slot scheduled for the class exam. However, with so many of you going to AGU, we need to reschedule this.

On Monday December 20

  • Your GRL-style paper is due.
