Project Handouts

Sample Creative Adaptations

From a senior seminar on film adaptations of British literature; note that the assignment has some components that overlap with our assignment, while other elements differ):

  • Frankenstein: On the reality television show, Makeover Madness, plastic surgeon Frank resculpts middle-aged Lizzy. Behind the scenes, the pair fall in love. However, the surgical procedures produce unexpected results.
  • Pride and Prejudice Translated: A modernization of the Austen novel in which New York- and L.A.-based families run businesses and their love lives.
  • Prometheus: A Harvard graduate student "stumbles upon a genetic process that allows him to alter the immune system" and thus cure cancer, but the process has unintended side effects.

Student Projects, Spring 2006

Frankenstein Projects

  • Frankenstein Goes Ghost World (Shaun McInnis): Alone after her friend, Enid, departs for college, Rebecca meets a bolt-necked Creature in the alley outside her favorite 1950s-style diner. As Rebecca befriends the Creature, the pair encounter Enid, who has returned home for break with a companion in tow, one who strangely resembles Rebecca's new-found friend. Includes original illustrations.
  • A Journey of Remorse (Raef Harrison): In 1875, a London newspaper publishes heartbreaking letters recovered from a rugged Arctic campsite.
  • Remade Man (Evan Woltz): In a Geneva hotel room, Victor Frankenstein awakes in a body elaborately stitched together after being torn apart. His blog records his descent into madness.
  • The Second Phase (Sen Ando): Recruit Vince encounters old acquaintance Devin at boot camp. Devin cannot remember anything before the coma resulting from his attempt to hang himself at the age of thirteen, including his friendship with Vince. However, he begins having memories that suggest Vince played a crucial role in the event. He'll do anything to gain knowledge of his past . . . anything. Includes original computer-generated images.

Hamlet Projects

Miscellaneous Projects

Star Wars Projects

  • If Leia Were a Jedi (Elysse Kimberlin): A New Hope reimagined with Leia in the hero's role. Includes original illustrations.
  • Intertexuality in Shadows of the Empire (Dan Glenn): While the Shadows of the Empire novel, comic books, video game, and trading cards illustrate multiple modes of intertexuality, these texts reveal a theoretical lack of attention to non-cinematic adaptations and a failure to fully analyze how a body of adaptations can comprise a single "text."
  • Star Wars: Alternate (Marella Petilo): A role-playing game that switches the genders of most major Star Wars characters. Viewers can use the character pages to run games exploring an alternate version of the Star Wars universe. The "Supplementary" page contains useful links on role-playing games.
  • Star Wars in Less Than Twelve Parsecs (Stan Toleffsen): A "Fifteen-Minute Star Wars" that reflects fan perceptions of the film's essential elements.
  • Star Wars: A Romantic Tale of Love (Masato Imai): A "Twenty-Five Minute Revenge of the Sith" that reflects the author's interpretation of Anakin as a tragic figure.
  • the woman without an umbrella (Edward Basse): In a series of ruminations upon a relationship gone sour, an imperial functionary ponders the social, political, and cultural costs of empire and rebellion.
