About This Site

Contents

I have included in this site a critical analysis of chapter one, an annotated passage from chapter one, and a page of links and credits.  The critical analysis is intended to help you, the reader, gain an understanding of the theme of community that consistently appears throughout the novel.  I chose chapter one to analyze because it demonstrates right away the type of relationships Janie with the community of Eatonville and the community in the Everglades, on the muck.
The purpose of the annotated passage is to further clarify my argument concerning the theme of community.  You will notice that there are links throughout the passage leading you to notes about a particular sentence, idea, or quotation. These are intended to help you follow my thought process as well as to further support my argument.
The annotated links and credits page has been provided for those who are interested in learning more about Zora Neale Hurston, the novel itself, or for those who are interested in finding some of the images I used.

About The Author

My name is Annie Wolf.  I am a political science major here at the University of Washington, and I expect to graduate in the Spring of 2004.  I was born in Spokane, Washington, but was raised in the Seattle area.  Outside of school and my part-time job I have little spare time, but when I do get a chance to get away,  I enjoy playing outdoors, salsa dancing, reading, and spending time with my friends and family.
