Deforestation

One of the many environmental issues within Fiji is deforestation. Deforestation is the permenant removal of forest cover by cutting down trees and the logging of timber, followed by clearing of the land in order to make way for cultivation, agriculture, settlements, roads, or construction. It is become a serious problem that is affecting the entire country. Some of the major consequences of deforestation are...

  • land degradation
  • sedimentation of inland and marine waters
  • soil erosion
  • air pollution
  • increased food hazards

Another environment problem that exists is the depletion of marine resources, which is a result of heavy metal concentration due to mining, sewage waste, oil spills, unsustainable population growth.

Along with disposal of sewage waste being a problem, there is the issues of waste disposal in general. There isn't enough adequate land to turn into disposal sites and the country lacks the knowledge of improving effiiciency in collection methods. Also industrial activities and high population growth are resulting in large amounts of industrial wastes and domestic wastes being discharged.
