The Abkhazian Republic was also part of the Georgian SSR. The end of the soviet era brought unrest to the region. The efforts to become free from Georgia led to a prolonged crisis. During the war in 1991-1994, ethnic cleansing took place on both sides - Georgian and Abkhazian. There were nearly 17,000 casualties. Since that time, there have continued to be local conflicts. However, this year the violence broke out with greater force.
