1980 - Anna Politkovskaya graduates from Moscow State University Journalism Department.

February 2001 - While reporting for Novaya Gazeta, a Russian newspaper, she is accused of spying for Chechens and held for three days by Russian forces.

2001 - A Dirty War: A Russian Reporter in Chechnya is released.

October 2002 - Requested to negotiate with Chechen rebels holding 850 hostages in Moscow Theater. Three days later, 42 rebels and 129 civilians were killed by nerve gas when Russian security forces ended the siege.

2003 - A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya is released.

September 1 2004 - Anna Politkovskaya poisoned on flight to Rostov.

February 2006 - Putin's Russia: Life in a Failing Democracy is released.

October 5, 2006 - In a radio interview with RFE/RL's Russian Service, Politkovskaya reveals her upcoming exposee on the FSB's (Russian Federal Security Service) use of torture in Chechnya.

October 7, 2006 - Anna Politkovskaya fatally shot outside her apartment complex in Moscow.

October 12, 2006 - Anna Politkovskaya's unfinished article alleging torture on Chechens by Russian security forces is printed in Novaya Gazeta newspaper.

November 19 2006 - Alexander Litvineko poisoned.

March 28, 2008 - Politkovskaya murder suspects identified.

October 15, 2008 - Politkovskaya lawyer, Karinna Moskalenko and family poisoned by mercury.

October 16, 2008 - Politkovskaya case starts without her family's leading lawyer, Moskalenko.

November 17, 2008 - The next scheduled hearing in the Politkovskaya murder case. The proceedings are closed.
