Field Trips

DESCRIPTION

East of the UW campus is a large field bordering Union Bay of Lake Washington. This area is the site of a former landfill, when garbage was dumped into the wetlands along Lake Washington.  Now, the Center for Urban Horticiulture (CUH) is actively managing the site to restablish native vegetation.  The CUH regularly mow meadows to keep down blackberrees & they have been replanting native trees & shrubs through ever larger sections of the habitat.  It is one of the few places with open fields and fresh water ponds in Seattle. These ponds attract many unusual migratory shore birds. This section of the bay is a great spot for viewing turtles.
