Instructor: Dr. Janelle Taylor Email: jstaylor@u.washington.edu Office: Denny M39 Office Hours: Tuesdays from 2:00 to 3:30 pm, or by appointment Telephone: (206) 543-4793 Sample Papers
These were some papers written for the first paper assignment that did a particularly good job weaving astute observation into rich description, and coming up with some interesting questions. We post them here as examples in the hope that you might find this helpful as you work toward your own next paper. And here are a few examples from the second paper assignment. Again, note the synthesis of examples and the use of multiple kinds of data. Meeting Times and Locations
Lecture meets Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 am until 12:20 pm in Smith 120. Students also meet in small 'Quiz Sections' once a week, on either Wednesday or Friday, in various times and at various locations. Check registration for complete Quiz Section information.
Course Description
This course introduces perspectives from sociocultural anthropology on the
diversity and the dynamics of collective human life. We will examine how
individual lives are shaped by broader social and cultural contexts,
how people make meaning, and how power relations work. The course also introduces
ethnography as a method for documenting and understanding social and
cultural life.
