TAPESTRY: The Art of Representation and Abstraction
Bit Map
DEFINITION
The term bit map is often used as a synonym for raster image or "pix map".
Bit map more correctly refers to a raster image consisting of only black and white pixels.
EXPLANATION
Each pixel of a raster image requires a certain amount of memory to store the color shown in the pixel. Pixels in a black and white image require only one bit per pixel. These bits correspond, or map, to positions in the image, leading to the idea of a "bit map".
