Feature extraction
Feature extraction methods will be used in conjunction with multi flash photography to produce ‘line animations’ of the structures inside the caves. Multi flash photography allows us to illuminate the target such as a stalactite from different angles. Image algebra can be performed on such photographs, along with image enhancements such as edge enhancements a ‘line animation’ outlining the structure and it’s most dominant features can be produced. When the methods are faithfully reproduces using the exact photographic parameters and setups at two different dates, change ‘line animations’ can be extracted and potentially applied to monitor the structures within a cave.
High resolution satellite or aerial imagery as the one of the Tom Aley's Ozark Underground Laboratory shown above are suitable candidates for feature extraction classification methods. To download a full resolution AVI of the above animation click here. |
