Student responsibilities and activities

Working under the supervision of the attending physician, fellow and resident, students will see and evaluate pulmonary consult patients from the medicine ward teams, obstetrics and gynecology, surgical and other services within the hospital. These consults generally cover a range of problems including the work-up of pulmonary nodules or infiltrates, management of complex pulmonary diseases such as pulmonary hypertension or the evaluation of other problems such as unexplained hypoventilation, dyspnea, difficulty separating a patient from the ventilator and ventilator-associated pneumonia. There has recently been less exposure to ICU management at this site now that there are dedicated ICU teams in the cardiothoracic and surgical ICUs but occasionally students will participate in consults on the patients on these services. Students will also gain experience reading pulmonary function tests and have the opportunity to observe bronchoscopies and cardiopulmonary exercise tests. Students do not go to outpatient pulmonary clinic. In addition to the structured educational conferences described below, students receive teaching from both the fellow and attending physician as part of the daily work on the team. The typical day begins at 8:00 AM and continues until the team’s responsibilities have been completed in the afternoon or early evening.
